My 2024 Goodreads Challenge is set at 26 books, with a specific focus on memoirs and biographies. Of these 26, I plan to read 9 life stories of individuals who've defied the odds and created something truly remarkable. Shout out to Daniel Acheampong for this great idea!

Though I typically post business and marketing POVs on LinkedIn, I'm excited to share some lessons drawn from these inspirational narratives—lessons that transcend professional boundaries and resonate in all aspects of life.

I started the year by re-reading one of the most impactful books I've ever read—The Choice by Edith Eger. Dr. Eger is a Holocaust survivor and a psychologist; her memoir reflects on her experiences in Auschwitz, her journey to healing, and the lessons she learned about resilience, forgiveness, and the power of choice.

Some of my key takeaways:

  • Our attitude shapes our experiences, and, by extension, the experiences of those around us. A positive and open-minded outlook can turn difficulties into opportunities for growth and transformation. Dr. Eger's ability to positively communicate played a crucial role in her survival during the Holocaust. Despite facing unimaginable adversity, she maintained a resilient and hopeful attitude, often using her communication skills to uplift and create a sense of camaraderie among fellow prisoners. In this way, she was able to shape a resilient community that not only shared the burden of unimaginable challenges but also collectively drew strength from the enduring power of hope and mutual encouragement.

  • Cultivating a solutions-oriented mindset is a game-changer.  One of my mentors, Miriam Warren, has always emphasized the importance of focusing on solutions for a more resilient and adaptable approach to both personal and professional challenges. Dr. Eger’s wisdom and Miriam's guidance have inspired me to commit to approaching roadblocks with 3 potential ways around them. Even if these paths aren't ultimately taken, they serve as catalysts for meaningful conversations. This mindset shift not only lightens the weight of setbacks but also transforms challenges into growth opportunities.

  • Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness but a catalyst for personal liberation. Dr. Eger's journey towards forgiveness, even for those who caused her immense pain, showcases the strength that comes with letting go. As I embrace this lesson, I'm reminded that forgiving is not about condoning the actions of others but about freeing myself from the weight of resentment. True strength lies in the ability to release the burden of anger.

  • Hope and imagination foster innovation and creativity. Envisioning positive outcomes and maintaining a hopeful outlook is essential for sparking creativity and helping find a path forward that we may not have initially envisioned. This is why visualization meditation is such an effective practice (thanks Peloton)! Visualization primes the mind to navigate difficulties through a lens of envisioning what’s possible, paving the way for us to create mental space for positive outcomes.

By emphasizing the transformative influence of choice, forgiveness, and finding meaning in even the most challenging experiences, Eger provides a profound guide for all of us. We all have the power to reshape personal narratives and lead lives with an abundance of purpose, joy and strength.

For those who haven’t read it, I highly recommend picking up a copy of The Choice— I'd love to chat and hear your thoughts on the book.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey of personal and professional growth. To that end, do you have any biographies or memoirs that have significantly impacted the way you think? Please share your recos!
